Tips & Tools

With live casino and random number generator (RNG) games, slots, tables, parlays, props, moneylines and much more, gambling options can be overwhelming for some. But they don’t have to be.

The Successful Mindset

You should never roll the dice when it comes to playing. A positive gaming experience starts with setting limits you’re comfortable with and sticking to them. Only you know what those limits are.

Ask yourself these questions

  • feature icon What’s your comfort level with risk?
  • feature icon What’s your casino or sportsbook responsible gaming plan?
  • feature icon How much time do you want to spend playing?
  • feature icon What’s your gambling budget?
  • feature icon What does a “big” win or loss look like for you?
  • feature icon Do you understand the rules of the game you’re playing?
  • feature icon What happens if you’re on a hot streak, but it’s time to stop?
  • feature icon Do you binge TV or play video games for long periods of time?

Gambling 101

It’s important to learn how the Casino and Sportsbook work before you begin playing and betting. That’s why every smart player has a little nerd in them. They study.

SPORTSBOOK

There are some classic bet types to familiarize yourself with before testing your sports smarts.

Moneyline

This is where you’ll find odds like +150 and -150. They’re based on a $100 bet.
  • feature icon A $100 winning bet at +150 pays $250 (your bet back + $150 profit)
  • feature icon A $100 winning bet at -150 pays 166.67 (your bet back + $66.67 profit)
Negative odds indicate the favourite and positive odds the underdog.

Spread

Similar to a moneyline, the spread makes games more intriguing for bettors.
  • feature icon Team A at -6.5 means you’re betting it will win by at least 6.5 points (really 7, since there are no half points)
  • feature icon Team B at +6.5 means you’re betting it will win outright or lose by fewer than 6.5 points (really 6, since there are no half points)
This means Team A is the favourite, and is where the term “covering the spread” comes from.

Over/Under

This is used for teams and players. The lines are set in advance and represent game totals. Total points, total yards, total goals, etc. Common bets include:
  • feature icon Team A vs. Team B over or under total X.X goals (soccer)
  • feature icon Quarterback A over or under XXX.X throwing yards (football)
  • feature icon Skater A over or under X.X points (hockey)

Single

This is the simplest form of betting. It’s one bet on a single outcome.

Bet Builder

Often called a Same Game Parlay, it strings together multiple bets within the same game to increase the total payout.

Parlay

This is stringing together two or more bets across multiple sports or games to increase the total payout.

Prop Bet

This is betting that a player or team will accomplish one outcome. For example, be the first team or player to score.

Live Bet

This is when you follow a game and bet it as the action is happening.
  • feature icon The next football team to score
  • feature icon If a hockey team will score on the current power play
  • feature icon Which player will the next point in a match

CASINO

The House Always Wins

While it may not be true every time, it’s always true over time. Casinos and Sportsbooks are profitable businesses. They make money from their customers, and you are one of them.

Return To Player (RTP)

This is part of why the house always wins. RTP is the percentage of wagers a game returns to players. Not one player, every player in the world. So a 96% RTP on your favourite slot means for every $1,000,000  wagered, the Casino earns $40,000.

Random Number Generator (RNG)

RNG is the heart of every Casino. It ensures that spins and cards are always random. That means luck has nothing to do with play. A hot streak is completely random, same as a losing streak. So you’re never actually “due for a win.”

How To Recognize Problem Gambling

Part of ToonieBet’s commitment to responsible gaming in Ontario is providing a safe space to play and helping people recognize when they or their loved ones show signs of a problem

Myth Busting

  • feature icon “If I keep playing, my luck will change and I’ll win my money back.”
Fact: One spin, one hand, one bet has nothing to do with the last. There are no guarantees.
  • feature icon “Almost won that one, I’m due for a win.”
Fact: “Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.” Definitely not in gambling.
  • feature icon “By playing more than one slot or blackjack game, my chances of winning go up!”
Fact: You also lose more. And over time, the house always wins.
  • feature icon “I’ve got a winning strategy.”
Fact: Outcomes are completely random. Slots are computers and spins are predetermined.
  • feature icon “Today’s my lucky day.”
Fact: There’s no such thing as luck in gambling. Everything is random.
